Biodiesel Discussion with Bob Davis

                                              Questions and Answers:

  1. How did you make vegetable oil into biodiesel? - Alcohol was used in addition with a catalyst and the vegetable oil to make the biodiesel.  The alcohol was needed to thin down the vegetable oil, so it could be properly stored and burned in the engine
  2. What do you designate as important information to pass down to the teachers for them to teach it to their students? - The major things teachers should know are safety during the project, waste products, cost (Is it efficient), and the chemistry behind the project.
  3. How has UVA employed the use of biodiesel in their buses? - UVA put up a competitive bid for developers of biodiesel to produce large amounts for them in their buses.  However, the gas in the UVA is only 20% biodiesel, and the rest is regular diesel.
  4. Has biodiesel ever been used in boats? - Biodiesel has been employed in boats, though it is more expensive than conventional diesel.  Users would have to pay extra for the luxury of cleaner and safer fuel.
  5. How much would you have to change about your engine to use Biodiesel?- To use Biodiesel in your engine you don't have to change anything to make it run, you just have to have thinned out Biodiesel or it will clog the engine.
  6. Where do you get the vegetable and what kind of vegetable oil do you have to use? - You can get the vegtable oil from the grocery store and you can use soy bean oil or, depending where you live Palm oil will work too.
  7. How is the price of Biodiesel compared to the price of Diesel?  Biodiesel is currently more costly than  diesel but once they find a way to make it faster can make it for less money the price of biodiesel will most likely drop.
  8. If biodiesel were to leak out of a boat what would happen to it?  Biodiesel breaks down if it is exposed to light too much so if it were to spill into the ocean it would just break down and have no negative impact.
